A Video Playlist of Live Four-Part Harmony Inspired Performances

On the U.S. calendar, Barbershop Quartet Day is designated April 11. Barbershop Quartets, a musical import from Great Britain, became quickly popularized in the latter 1800s and early 1900s.

Comprised of four singers, the basic vocal expression relies on singers to sing lead, baritone, bass, and tenor. Barbershop quartets, though mostly male, rarely contain cross-gender membership. Over the evolution of the barbershop quartet genre in America, African-American have contributed to the vocal expressiveness of the form.

Here is a few videos which present a condensed history of barbershop quartet music and the musical structure and format of the typical barbershop quartet. This playlist also includes examples of traditional barbershop quartets and other related musical genres which include multi-part acapella vocal harmonies. This playlist also includes examples like the Mills Brothers who utilized the four-part harmony format with musical accompaniment.
