Remembering A Studious and Serious Patron of the Arts
As a student of the dramatic arts, most memorably under the tutelage of Sonia Moore at her Studio of the Theatre, I wanted to acknowledge the passing of James Lipton on March 2, 2020. (Louis) James Lipton was a writer, actor, and dean emeritus of the Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in New York City.
Most known to many as the host of Bravo’s cable series Inside the Actors Studio, Lipton interviewed many of my favorites actors: Robert DeNiro, Meryl Streep, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Robin Williams, Alan Alda, Kathy Bates, Whoopie Goldberg, Stephen Sondheim, Forest Whittaker Sigourney Weaver, Spike Lee, Don Cheadle, Glenn Close, and Morgan Freeman. Debuting in 1994, Lipton retired from the show in 2018.
