If you don’t think perseverance breeds ultimate success, then you may not know my friend Popeye. American artist E.C. Segar was the creator of this iconic cartoon character.
If Popeye became impassioned and committed to a quest, he’d persevere come hell or high water. His nemesis Brutus would brutally oppose his efforts. Brutus often pummeled Popeye and bounced him off objects and pounded him into the ground like a human nail. But still Popeye persisted.
At the end of his endurance, Popeye would exclaim something like, “I’ve taken alls I can stand and I can’t stands no more!” Then, by whatever means possible, Popeye pulls out a can of spinach from his shirt, wolfs down the contents, and becomes a super-powered dynamo able to vanquish Brutus and all other obstacles as he goes on to complete his mission.
Bugs Bunny might have had that clever wit, but it was Popeye who examplified stick-to-it-ness. How many of us set a course for a long-term goal and find outselves knocked off course when we encounter the first series of obstacles? And, although you can see me as I write this post, I’m also raising my hand. I’m definitely guilty of being too easily dissuaded from accomplishing my mission, whatever that mission may be at the time.
Lol, in fact, this blog is a renewed commitment to engage with my fellow [male and female] creatives. As I am passionate about achieving this goal, I know I can remain committed. My past success has always come about through persistence. And though, like any artist, I love to be inspired; I recognize my inspiration usually comes when I am disciplined and put in effort over time. And when I don’t allow myself to be bumped off course by the challenges that block my route.
How many of us give up just prior to a major breakthrough? Reflecting back I certainly see times where I should have stayed the course. Okay, that was yester-year. Today is a new day. Perhaps, if I apply the lessons I’ve learned from previous journeys while recommitting myself to my updated mission, I’ll be able to mark 2019 as a breakthough year.
And, if I find myself flagging in my perserverance, I’ll take a cue from Popeye, and eat some spinach. Maybe a spinach salad or sauteed spinach with garlic. If nothing else, at least I’ll be fortified.
